Tournament History
King Of The Ill is a character design tournament held at the Montserrat College of Art. Participants are Fall 2011 Illustration and Animation + Interactive Media majors enlisted in the school’s Character Creation and Illustrating Fiction classes, respectively taught by Antoine Revoy and Kelly Murphy. Students are partnered to compete in a tag team tournament in which their designs are judged by a jury of creative professionals. Special awards in various categories (“Most Humorous”, “Most Original”…) will be given by school faculty, independently from the tournament’s fight results.
The tournament was inspired by a previous iteration of such a competition at the Montserrat College of Art, as former instructors of the Character Creation class Evan Larson and Joe Quinones organised the MONTSERR-ALL-OUT-BRAWL in 2009. This previous competition saw fights between individual character designs and match decisions made by votes from the student body. This tournament, in turn, found its roots in the online illustration project FIST-A-CUFFS initiated by Sam Hiti. More generally, King of The Ill was inspired by tournaments in manga such as Kinniku Man, Tiger Mask, Ring ni Kakero and video games such as the Street Fighter and Garou Densetsu (Fatal Fury) series.
Prior to the tournament’s start in late November 2011, this site will be showcasing work by students of the Montserrat College of Art‘s Character Creation class.
